“Tony Joe White, he’s the real deal.” -- Stephen Malkmus

NASHVILLE, TN – Tony Joe White, whose 1969 hit “Polk Salad Annie” introduced the world to the funky, country-blues groove known as “swamp rock”, reprises some of his classic songs for modern times with Deep Cuts, out on Swamp Records, June 10.

The record is the 21st release of White’s 40-year career and features some of the songwriter’s most decidedly vivid storytelling in songs which date back to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. White and his son Jody cut these classic songs utilizing a palette full of beats and loops, samples, digital and live drums, strings and organs. Though the sonic updates refresh the sound, the record is still rooted in the bayou funk of White’s unmistakable guitar and his swaggering baritone.

Two songs from Deep Cuts, “As the Crow Flies,” and “Roosevelt and Ira Lee,” are available for preview on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/tonyjoewhite.

Rolling Stone’s David Fricke calls the Louisiana native’s music, “As funky as anything out of Stax or Muscle Shoals.” Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Dusty Springfield, Hank Williams, Jr., and Kenny Chesney have all cut White’s songs; he has opened on tour for Eric Clapton, Creedence Clearwater Revival, James Taylor and Joe Cocker.
